Our Plan for Cleaner Drinking Water
In September 2023, initial tests by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA), and the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) detected lead in water at 36 St. Croix meter locations; 30 sites were significantly below action levels. In November, 119 subsequent samples taken by EPA proved that levels of lead at household kitchen taps were far lower than those found at the meters. WAPA is currently reviewing and adopting EPA recommendations received in December.
Over 2650 eligible customers residing in the affected areas and holding active water accounts with usage from July to December 2023, have been issued water vouchers redeemable at local businesses. Those customers will receive a $75 bill credit starting January 5, 2024, valid until the amount expires. Through DPNR’s Clean Water Drinking Fund, eligible customers will also receive water filters in January.
Out of an abundance of caution, an initiative to test the water island wide has begun. WAPA customers interested in free lead testing of their tap water are urged to email [email protected] by January 14, 2024.
WAPA continues to address discolored water in specific St. Croix neighborhoods by installing more hydrants to assist in daily pipe flushing, strengthening its corrosion control program, and replacing dated pipeline infrastructure with lead-free components. An expected $1.5B in FEMA funding will support island-wide water infrastructure replacement.
WAPA is working collaboratively with the Office of the Governor, Department of Health, Department of Planning and Natural Resources and other local agencies to ensure clean and safe water for the people of the Territory.
